Pleomorphy in stalked, budding bacteria.
An investigation of hyphomicrobia from manganese deposits and various fresh-water habitats revealed an astonishing degree of pleomorphy in the group. A range of variation spanning two described genera (Hyphomicrobium and Pedomicrobium) was induced by varying culture conditions and was further observed in natural environments. It is suggested that Pedomicrobium is an invalid genus.
متن کاملThe Fine Structure of Two Unusual Stalked Bacteria
Two strains of bacteria that produce slender appendages (pseudostalks) from their lateral surfaces were studied using the electron microscope. The pseudostalks were shown to be extensions of the cytoplasm and peripheral membranes of the cell proper. Both strains of bacteria produce holdfasts at the poles of the cells by the means of which attachment can take place. The pseudostalks are not invo...

Dynamics of the peptidoglycan biosynthetic machinery in the stalked budding bacterium Hyphomonas neptunium.
Most commonly studied bacteria grow symmetrically and divide by binary fission, generating two siblings of equal morphology. An exception to this rule are budding bacteria, in which new offspring emerges de novo from a morphologically invariant mother cell. Although this mode of proliferation is widespread in diverse bacterial lineages, the underlying mechanisms are still incompletely understoo...
متن کاملThe Fine Structure of Stalked Bacteria Belonging to the Family Caulobacteraceae
The fine structure of a series of stalked bacteria belonging to the genera Caulobacter and Asticcacaulis has been examined in thin sections. The cell wall has the multilayered structure typical of many Gram-negative bacteria, and continues without interruption throughout the length of the stalk. The core of the stalk, continuous with the cytoplasmic region of the cell, is enclosed in an extensi...
